Maritime Security

Attacks on ships in port and at sea have posed a big challenge to the maritime industry in recent years.  Ship owners, charterers and insurers alike are being affected by the increased cost of business and the high security risk to their manpower, cargo and vessels.  While we are seeing government and private sector anti-piracy measures developed, some are still concerned by the expanding territorial reach of sea pirates.

Patrols by international navies along the coast of Somalia have seen a reduction in the number of incidents – an initiative many industry leaders would like to see sustained.  What are the latest measures taken by local governments to help further protect their flag ships? Are there intra-regional cooperation initiatives and how will the commercial sector be affected?

How is the risk associated with seizure of cargo, vessels and crew divided among ship owners, charterers and shippers? How does one mitigate the risk of business lost or delays due to act of piracy?

The panel of speakers will attempt to clarify gray areas covered under the complexity of shipping insurance; address the liability and responsibility of shippers as a vessel travels through high risk waters; and address the impact of naval convoy operations on the overall maritime security situation. Our security panelists will provide real case studies of recent incidents including – advice on negotiations, security escorts, incident response, and the precautionary measures one can adopt.
